chapterrrrrrrrrrrr eL3vEn (((:

acquitted ~ To free or clear from a charge or accusation

The case of a man accused of stealing a car was acquitted.

1. Explain why Pony might rather have anyone's hate than their pity (p.162)?
Ponyboy wouldnt want to have somebodies pity because that means that they look down at you for something you did or you dont have, and it could mean that they think there better then you.
2. What do you think is going on with Ponyboy when he says, "Johnny didn't have anyhing to do with Bob's getting killed" (p.166)?
I think Ponyboy means that the Johnny he knows wouldnt have killed Bob, Johnnys the pet, they easily loved one that would never harm anyone. Or maybe that he only killed him self defence so he didnt mean to kill him or he was juts trying to get him off of Ponyboy.
chaptEr teN :D

indignantly -- expressing strong displeasure at something considerered offensive, insulting or unjust.
> Susan gasped indignantly when she saw the last copy of her favorite book being baught.

1. How does Pony's dreaming, or lying to himself, finally work in this chapter?
Pony lying to himself helped him so he wouldnt go crazy knowing the fact that Johnny was really dead. It made him imagine the who thing was a dream and they were back in the vacant lot and nothing happened and Johnny was still there.
2. Why was Johnny's dying so difficult for Dally to handle?
Because Johnny was the only person Dally actually loved and understood him the most.
3. Why do you think Dally would have wanted to die?
Because he thought that with Johnny gone there was no point of him living, because the person he most cared about was gone and Dally couldnt take that.
chapttttttttttteR nin3 :]

1. On the bottom of p.133, when Pony asks what kind of a world it is, what comment is he making about how society judges people?
Ponys talking about how people judge other people from were they come from, what they look like. For example the Greasers arent the richest, or even rich people and they are seen as poor always fighting, a greaser, and a hood.
2. Why do the boys fight? Why is Pony different?
The boys fight to show off or for the thrill and the contest see whos better.
Pony is different because he doenst like to fight, he does express himself but not in that kind of way.
3. What is the difference between Tim Sheppard's gang and Ponyboy's? Explain how Pony feels this difference might give his group the upper hand?
Tims group had a leader, tim who they listened to and did what he said while Ponys group didnt really have one. Ponys group wasnt going to stay a hood, greaser all there lives, they were going to grow up and do something with it. WHile Shepards group was going to stay a good all their lives.
4. What do you think Johnny's last words to Pony mean?
I think stay gold, meant stay young. Dont grow up to fast because your only a kid for so long.
CHAPTER EIGHT <33

1. How does what the doctor first says, on page 119, foreshadow Johnny's condition?
When the doctor told the nurse to let then in cause " it couldn't hurt now" foreshadowed that Johnny was very very sick and was maybe dying and then seeing Johnny wouldn't affect Johnnys health because he was already sick.
2. "We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason" (p.121). What do you think Pony means, and what is the reason?
Ponyboy means that Johnny is family to them, they are Johnnys family and without him it wouldn't be the same. Like a big part of you missing that would never be replaced, and couldn't ever.
3. What does Pony mean on p. 123 when he says, "we could get along without anyone but Johnny"?
Pony means that no one in the group could get along better with anyone else but Johnny, he was sweet, kind, innocent and caring after all he was the pet. He was kind of like the centerpiece of the family, he was what held the gang together.. kind of.
4. If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony, why would he be a soc?
If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony he would be a Socs because he has the looks, the smarts, and hes very athletic and the only thing that was keeping him from becoming a Soc was his brothers and the gang.
5. What does Cherry mean when she says Bob "wasn't just anyone" on p.129?
She meant that he wasn't just the guy who "liked" to jump the greasers and was a bad guy. He also had a good side, a loving one. He had something special about him that made people follow him and he was someone special to Cherry. Not just anyone to her, Cherry might of even loved him.
CHAPTER SEVEN*

1. Explain what Pony means when he says Soda "reminds me of a colt" on p. 101.
Pony means that Johnny is like a horse or a colt, becuase whenever something excited happenes there the first ones to know or poke there nose in. Johnny likes things with action
2. What condition is Johnny in after the fire?
Johnny is in cridical condition, if he was ever well to get out of the hospital he wouldnt be able to walk again because the wood piece that hit his back. He also got 3rd degree burns.
3. Why would being crippled be worse for Johnny than someone else?
Being crippled would be much worse to Johnny then anyone else because he couldnt go much places anymore, he wouldnt be able to hang with the gang as much: his only family. He would have to stay in the house alot were his parents abuse him which wouldnt be any good for him.
4. "Maybe people are younger when they are asleep" (p.104). what do you think about this comment?
I think its kind of true, because people look more innocent when they sleep while when there awake the way they act can change the "age". People look more babyish when the sleep which could have something to do when poeple say they look younger.
5. What is a juvenile delinquent (p. 107)? Find a definition on the internet, in a dictionary, or create your own based on your own knowledge
Juvenile delinquency may refer to either violent or non-violent crime committed by persons who are (usually) under the age of eighteen and are still considered to be a minor.
.6. Why would Two-Bit think Johnny, Dally, and Pony were heroes all along; before they saved the kids?
I think he would think that they were heroes from the beginning because he could notice from the type of people they are, like how they treat the gang and other people, the fire just showed everybody it physically.
7. What was Bob's 'real' problem, according to Randy (p.116)?
According to Randy Bobs real problem was his parents. They never told him really No , no one ever really layed down the laws. Bob always got what he wanted and never got in trouble for anything bad he did. They thought that Bob was the kind of guy who was smart popular and good looking and he would never do anything bad and if he did "it couldnt of been his fault" the parents would take the blame.
8. Why did Pony think it was better to see socs as "just guys" on p. 118? What do you think he means by this?
I think it was better for Pony to see a Soc as just a guy because he always see's them as rich, popular stuck up people who never care about anybody with no feelings. But talking to him as just a guy Pony realizes that Socs have feelings too, they actually have problems of there own.
chapter sIx (:

bewildered >> completly confussed, unaware, or puzzled.

Johnny and Ponyboy were bewildered that the church caught on fire and little kids were in there.

1. Do you think Dally's parents have influenced the way he is; his personality? Explain.
Yes i think it made a great impact of Dally because dally had no parents there when he was growing up. So he had to learn to do things on his own which madehim tough and stuff. Like nobody to tell him right from wrong.
2. Why doesn't Dally want Johnny to turn himself in?
Dally didnt want Johnny to turn himself in so he wouldnt become like him, jail made dallas tough and angry and Dallas didnt want Johnny to turn himself in so he wouldnt become like that.
3. What "other side" of Dallas is revealed in this chapter?
The soft side of dallas is revealed in this chapter when hes talking to Ponyboy and Johnny about his time in jail and what it was like. It was like Ponyboy and Johnny just met Dallas, they never say this caring side to him.
4. What's your own definition of a hero? Do the three boys prove themselves to be heroes, according to your definition? Explain.
I dont think a hero has super powers or is mega strong, but someone who is gallant and willing to sacrafice something for someone else. I do tink Johnny Ponyboy and Dallas proved themsleves to be heroes by going in the burning church to save a bunch of little kids not caring about themselves or there own health just so the kids would be safe.
Thats a true hero.
5. Why do you think Johnny wasn't scared, despite the obvious danger, on page 92?
I think Johnny wasnt scared because all he was thinking that he started the fire and he had to do someting about it, like get those kids out no matter what, because if something happened to them in the church and it burned down. Knowing kids die partially because of you, he wouldnt be able to live with the guilt.
chapter fiVe >>

reluctantly - Unwilling; disinclined

eluded - to avoid or escape by speed, cleverness, trickery
imploringly - to beg urgently or piteously, as for aid or mercy
gallant - brave, spirited, noble-minded, or chivalrous
indignant - feeling, characterized by, or expressing strong displeasure at something considered unjust, offensive, insulting, or base

Moday morning Susan reluctantly got out of bed and started getting ready for school, when she realized she didnt want to go to school! Susan went downstairs and was imploringly asking her mother if she could stay home from school. Her mother said no, Susan sullenly walked away. She waled back into the room and told her mom eludedly that she was feeling sick. Susan was perfectly fine :O. She wanted to stay home so she could hang out with her friends, but she feslt very indignant about what she was doing. Susan was on her way to her friends and couldnt believe what she was doing so she walked home and explained it to her mother, which said that coming back and telling her was very gallant.

1. Why does Pony have a problem with Johnny's idea to disguise themselves?
Because Pony doesnt like the idea of cutting off all of his hair and dying it because he feels thats what makes him a Greaser and his hair was the best feature about him and that him and Sodapopo had the best hair around and he was proud of it. He didnt want to get rid of it.
2. What does Pony mean when he says, "I was supposed to be the deep one" (p. 75)?
Pony was reading Johnny " Gone in the Wind " and was talking about how Johnny got more things in there then he did and thats when he said he was supposed to be the deep one. Meaning that Ponyboy is the one whos into books and poetry and is the smart one.
3. Why does Johnny think he is a hero (p. 76)? Do you think Dally is a hero based on what he did?
Johnny thinks Dally is a hero because he is gallant and always takes whats comming at him. Like in the book how Two-bit broke the schools windows and the police went after Dallas about that and put him in jail, he didnt even rat on Two-Bit. In Johnny's eyes, he thinks thats what a true heros like. I would agree with Johnny that Dallas is a hero based on what Johnnys thinking.
4. Why does Pony realize he doesn't like Dally? Can you explain what he means by this?
He realized he doesnt like Dally when Johnny was taking about him being a hero.
He liked him least because he didnt have Sodas understanding or dash, Two-Bits humour, or Darrys superman qualities. Then he sayd that Dallas was real & that scared him. because Ponyboy always looks for a hero being like one in a book or fairytale and Dallas was real.

5. Examine Robert Frost's poem, Nothing Gold can Stay. What do you think the poem is saying? How might this apply to the characters in the novel?
When the poem says " Natures first green is gold " i think it means when your young- (like your first green) your gold and it wont last that long so you have to treasure it now because it will end soon. I think the poems talking about Ponyboy.
6. On page 78, Johnny compares Pony and his brothers to their parents. Which one of your parents are you most like? What similarities do you share?
I don't know if im more like any of my parents. But I have been told i look like my dads side of the family and i get my athlecticness part from my dads side too, but i do have some qualities from my mom.
7. What does Pony mean when he says he drinks Pepsis like a friend (p.78)?
Ponyboy means thathe drinks Pepsi so much, so often that its kinda of like a friend.
Like you always hang out with your friend and you know alot about them, thats like Pony and his Pepsi.
8. What's a 'heater'? Why does Dally have one?
A heater is a slang for a gun. Dally has one for a bluff, so if he ever gets jumped or gets in a fight with a bunch of Socs, he can pull that out and use it as a bluff. Becuase the firearm isnt loaded.
9. Why are the socs and the greasers going to fight in the vacant lot?
Because the Socs are mad at the Greasers because they killed there main Socs - Bob (Johnny). And there angry because of that and want to get them back.
10. Who's the spy for the greasers? Does this surprise you? Why or why not?
Cherry is the spy. This doesnt suprise me at all because she only wants to help Ponyboy and Johnny, and Dallas.
Cherry is Ponyboy and Johnnys friend and has a little thing for Dallas. And no one would think that she would be giving out the Socs info to the greasers because she is a Scos herslef. Maybe another reason why she would do this is because she think that part of it is her fault.
